Can a town change you? Let's find out. Welcome to Nyon. As I took the train from the geneva station, I wondered how villages in Europe would be. After visiting numerous villages in India, I imagined a similar rugged, agriculturally based lifestyle for those living on the outskirts of the city. But boy, was I wrong. The town of Nyon (geneva) seemed to have a population of less than 20,000. Evidently, the first step towards the threshold of the station made me feel like I was entering a tranquil home! I will not bore you with architecturally rich details since the core of this village was not its superb infrastructure or its pre-eminent symmetry of roads and bay windows. It was its inlet (bay).
Whilst I walked down the cobbled streets, it gave me an experience of what a 15th-century individual would be feeling. Quite a cliche to add a ‘Harry Potter’ like setting, but yes, it seemed I was right up Diagon alley.
I walked through the quaint streets, ogling at the buildings that had very little space between them because of which the rays of the sun reflected amid the space like a divine graphic design.
So when my little legs took me as far as I can go, I landed at the Bay of the village passing two middle-aged men in Bermuda's toasting to their 4th can of beer and their kids running around a little garden that was glowing green.
My eyes re-adjusted themselves after which I saw the most magnificent landscape I had ever envisioned. Of course, It was Lake Geneva but its strange fusion with the cumulus clouds above and the alps awaiting right behind made it look like magic. I swore I saw a similar image as a Microsoft wallpaper.
Have you ever wondered if peaks and mountains can smile? I think they can. I could see Mont Blanc taunting me for discovering this Shangri La so late in my life.
Sometimes the beauty of the place is so overwhelming that it forces you to rethink your plans of exploration.
I won’t lie; I had a list ready with me. I was ready to check off every pointer on my little notepad. Fortunately, I would say I failed.
A drop-dead gorgeous grandmother of two overly-enthusiastic kids owned a cafe by the lake where I was served a chilled beer and some nuts.Time decided to give me an off that day. It stopped rushing for me. The endless, infinite sky that lay beyond me seduced this idiot who was once always in a rush in a way that he cannot comprehend.
You see, as my gaze shifted, I noticed the wonderful cafe owner playing with one of her granddaughters while making a milkshake for the other. Two young boys skateboarded through the empty streets, whistling and cheering for each other.
The two middle-aged men had now reached out for another beer and with that, so did the expanse of joy on their faces.
Out of the beguiling house on the corner of the road, arrived a family of four. I don’t know these four but I am certain they too had a story to tell.
I understand that you do not like slowing down. You want to progress, gain success through aggressive, intolerable methods that enrich your venture but damage the soul. But I hope whoever reads this comes to what I have come to and realise that the joy in slowing down is no less a feat, especially when the atmosphere around encourages you for the same.
I hope you sit still the way I did in the hypnotic town of Nyon. Take a walk down its cobbled streets, feel the warmth of the sun as it reflects off the buildings and the lake. Enjoy a chilled beer and some nuts at a quaint cafe by the lake, and watch as the mountains smile at you.
